LUGBE, ABUJA SUBURB WITH THE HIGHEST PREVALENCE OF HIV/AIDS

|
Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja, has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Abuja, the Capacity Development Officer for SURE-P, Jummai Danuk, has said.

She made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja at a sensitisation on HIV testing and counselling held in Lugbe.

The campaign was jointly organised by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, and Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P.

The campaign, aimed at encouraging the community on voluntary HIV/AIDS testing, witnessed a large turnout.

Mr. Danuk, who represented Sebastian Wakdok, Project Director, NACA/SUPE-P HIV/AIDS programme, said Lugbe was chosen for the campaign due to the Prevalence Surveillance Survey conducted in the area recently.

She said “We needed to take the treatment to the grassroots; Lugbe is the ideal place because it is along the expressway which makes it easy to access the satellite villages.

“The Prevalence Surveillance Survey shows that Lugbe has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS along the axis; this informed our choice of coming to Lugbe for the exercise”, she said.

Mr. Danuk said due to stigma attached to the disease, Lugbe communities had not felt the impact of what development partners were doing in area of access to services for treatment.

She said Abuja ranks number eight in states with the highest HIV prevalence in Nigeria and attributed the development to its cosmopolitan nature.

“The influx of people from other states have adverse effects on HIV/AIDS prevalence in the FCT”, Mr. Danuk said.

She said that prevention was important in the fight against HIV/ AIDS or any other disease, adding that it was necessary that an individual should know his status irrespective of age, s*x and social status.

Mr. Danuk expressed concern that foreign donors assisting Nigeria in the fight against the disease were leaving the country as they no long classify HIV as a serious issue.

Speaking earlier, Micah Jiba, the Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council, represented by Josephine Nneme, Supervisory Councillor for Health, commended NACA and SURE-P for considering Lugbe for the free medical outreach.

RIVER OF TEARS

With the coo of Doves,
So peaceful it was a time.
Graciously guided her heritage
Like a Panther she prides herself in the ways of survival.

Oh! Benue my Home

So peaceful
Like a giraffe she stands tall amongst her peers
Carve a name that blesses all like the rain.

Oh! The Food Basket of the Nation

Oh! Tears and tears,
Again and again
Washing away our heritage we once guided.
We run and run without saying
Goodbye to our yams, our pride
No more River Benue,
But, the Red sea.
The river of blood
Where are the Pharaohs from?
Like scatter sheep,
Mothers cry for their children
Children for their mothers
But the blood separates both

Oh! Benue my people

I AM THAT I AM

Like a child HE does embrace everybody
Come let us reason together HE says
But we maintain a distance
Though we chose to live in enmity with HIM
HE opens HIS arms but we embrace HIM not
HE is ready to hear even though we are not ready to call
Come to Me but we decline the invitation
Follow me but we prefer our lead
Be still but we say the worries are too much
Take my path we say life is a choice
Even though u wasted my divine energy of creation
But my providence is for u to take
Worry not my child
For I AM the all-knowing GOD
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee

DR. DRE TOPS FORBES

Here’s a report from FORBES, of the highest earning musicians of 2014, Dr. Dre is the highest of the highests.
Fifteen years ago Dr. Dre wondered aloud whether people had forgotten about him. If there was a question then, it has certainly dissipated throughout the next steps of a career filled with highlights—most recently the sale of Beats, the company he co-founded, to Apple AAPL -1.88% for $3 billion.

Dr. Dre took home $620 million this year before taxes, thanks largely to that deal, making him the world’s top-earning musician of 2014. More remarkably, that number also marks the largest single-year haul of any musician, ever.

Dr. Dre’s payday gives him the widest margin in history between the first and second spots on list—half a billion dollars separate him from the No. 2 earner, BeyoncĂ©, who pulled in $115 million. Her most lucrative year yet comes courtesy of her Mrs. Carter Show tour, a surprise album and endorsements with the likes of Pepsi and H&M .

Also on the list is The Eagles with $100 million, Bon Jovi with $82 million, Bruce Springsteen with $80 million, Katy Perry with $40 million, Miley Cyrus with $36 million and Lady Gaga ($33 million).

Justin Bieber ($80 million) and One Direction ($75 million) are the only acts under age 30 to make the top ten; Taylor Swift finished at No. 11 ($64 million

OBASANJO'S WATCH

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has blamed the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging some parts of northern Nigeria on the Niger Delta amnesty programme, as he described the programme as a failure.

The ex-president also stated that President Goodluck Jonathan administration’s approach to curbing the activities of the Niger Delta militants “had taken the form of throwing money at the problem, particularly stuffing the pockets and bank of the militants’ leadership with obscene cash in reckless and unsustainable manner”.

These views were expressed by Mr. Obasanjo in his controversial autobiography, My Watch, a three-volume memoir, which was launched in Lagos Tuesday.

According to the outspoken former president, the way and manner in which the militants were enriched by the federal government fuelled the Boko Haram insurgents.

“The idea is that ‘what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander’. After that (Niger Delta amnesty programme) is accomplished, I suppose the Movement for Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in the South-East will make their own demand, which of necessity must be heeded. And finally, Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) in the South-West will not be left out”, he stated.

Obasanjo also lashed out at his successor, late President Umaru Yar’Adua and the present administration on security under their watch, stressing that it was one of the things that “got me worried”.

Commenting on President Jonathan’s response to the abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, Obasanjo said “the one incident that overtly and graphically exposed the ineptitude, ineffectiveness, inefficiency, carelessness, cluelessness, callousness, insensitivity and selfishness of Goodluck Jonathan was the abduction of about 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno State by Boko Haram.

“The reaction and attitude of our president and his household was that of non-belief, to the extent that 18 days passed before he grudgingly conceded to accept the reality of the abduction. If serious action had been taken within 48 hours, the story could have been different. Seventy-two hours was, for me, too late. After all, there would have been logistics required for moving almost 390 girls through the bush and small settlements by the Boko Haram”.

In the third volume of the book entitled ‘Now and Then’, Obasanjo described President Jonathan as a failure to the country.

He said: “After watching, reaching out to, studying, talking to and listening to the president himself and the people around him, I came, sadly, to a number of conclusions that mark Jonathan out as a man of adequate intelligence to run the affairs of Nigeria but lacking in broad vision, knowledge, confidence, understanding, concentration, capacity, sense of security, courage, moral and ethical principles, character and passion to move the nation forward on a fast trajectory”.

The former president also decried what he described as the selfish interest of Mr. Jonathan, saying he places his personal interest far above both national and party interests.

Referring to the 2011 general elections, the former PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman claimed that heavy financial prices were paid to Lagos and Ondo states’ opposition to secure votes for President Jonathan against the interest of the PDP at the state levels.

“I had watched Jonathan and stood close to him in picking the national chairman of the party and chairman of board of trustees that succeeded me. What I saw and heard from him disgusted me to no end. Where Jonathan’s interests are concerned, there can be no decorum. Everything can be ‘rofo rofo’ and no party or national interests matter”.

He, however, restated his “unrepentant optimism” that Nigeria will once again remain united and regain its lost glory.

“When I became president in 1999, some people told me that I will be the last president of Nigeria, but there have been many presidents after me up until now and there will be many more presidents for Nigeria in many years to come. Nigeria has many challenges, but if we are determined we will make right everything that had gone wrong”.

APC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY: BUHARI IN EARLY LEAD

Muhammadu Buhari

As vote counting continues
Onyebuchi Ezigbo and Shola Oyeyipo in Lagos

The former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, has taken an early lead over four other presidential aspirants as the counting of votes progresses this morning.

Signs of Buhari's commanding lead came as officials kept announcing his name as most of the votes were being announced .

The result so far has thrown up surprises with the Kano state Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso being the one giving Buhari a close chase while former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar is trailing behind with Rochas Okorocha and Sam Nda-Isaiah.
At the moment, vote counting has gone half way.

MIKEL OBI NETS FIRST CHAMPION LEAGUE GOAL

The Nigerian capped a beautiful display to score his first Uefa Champions League goal in his side’s win against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday

Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel scored his first Uefa Champions League goal in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat of Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday at the Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas swung in a free kick from the left hand side that was flicked towards goal by Cahill. Mikel and Matic were fighting for the ball at the back post but it was the Nigerian who got the final touch to increase the lead for the Blues.

Cesc Fabregas had opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Filipe Luis was brought down by Ricardo Esgaio inside the first ten minutes.

Andre Schurrle added a second shortly after, with a fierce shot from the edge of the box following good work by Nemanja Matic.

Sporting clawed a goal back in the second half through Jonathan Silva, but John Obi Mikel restored the home side's advantage and secured all three points, while Schalke's victory over Maribor meant the Lisbon side did not qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

UCHE, THE BEST AFRICAN IN LA LIGA

Ikechukwu Tongololiki Mawakavamba Jawarapawara Uche is a name unlikely to fit on the back of a shirt. Fortunately, however, the Nigerian striker is better known simply as Uche - or Ike to his team-mates - and he is now the finest African footballer in La Liga.

The 30-year-old forward has spent his entire playing career in Spain, having moved at the age of 14 and worked his way up from regional football to the Primera Division with Villarreal via Racing Ferrol, Recreativo Huelva, Getafe, Zaragoza and a loan spell at Granada.

Brother of former Almeria and Espanyol striker Kalu Uche, the Nigerian first came to prominence in the Primera Division due to his knack of scoring against Real Madrid. The striker netted the third goal in Recreativo's famous 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2006; he bagged the winner for Getafe at the same stadium as half of Madrid's side celebrated a disallowed goal in the corner and play was allowed to continue; he added another as the Azulones beat Los Blancos 3-1 later that year.

At Zaragoza he was less fortunate, spending a total of nine months on the sidelines after suffering two serious knee injuries. Then transferred to Villarreal in 2011, he was immediately loaned to Granada and scored the goal which gave the Andalusian side their first Primera Division win for 35 years. That came, ironically, against Villarreal and by the time the striker returned to El Madrigal at the end of the 2011-12 season, his parent club had been relegated to Spain's second tier.

But Uche hit 14 goals in the Segunda Division as Villarreal bounced back immediately, and added a further 14 to finish as top African scorer in La Liga last season. The Nigerian has contribued a further four for the Yellow Submarine this term and is now considered a key player for Marcelino Garcia Toral's team, currently lying sixth in the top flight.

Villarreal have opened talks with the player about signing a new contract and team-mate Gerard Moreno believes the club should keep the striker, who recently lost out to Granada's Yacine Brahimi (now at Porto) for the award handed to the best African player in La Liga.

"If the club want to extend his contract then that's good news," Moreno said. "It's really important that Uche stays with us. Not just because of his goals, but for all the hard work he brings to the team."

Still a long way from the 232 games played by Samuel Eto'o (as well as his 135 goals) in La Liga and unlikely to catch Malaga goalkeeper Carlos Kameni (239 games and counting), Uche is nevertheless writing his own story in Spain and can now be considered the finest African footballer in the Primera Division.

MONEY WHORE

Kevin Hart tried to gouge Sony Pictures out of extra money -- on top of the millions he already received -- for promoting his movie on social media, and a Sony exec groused, "I'm not saying he's a whore, but he's a whore" ... this according to the latest in the Sony Leak.

Clint Culpepper, a studio exec, sent several emails to studio heads, complaining that Kevin made $3 million and then $4 million for his last 2 Sony flicks, yet when he was asked to tweet out a plug for "Think Like a Man Too," his agent balked because he felt Kevin's expertise in social media was worth additional money.

Culpepper suggests they put the screws to Kevin, writing, "I'm tempted to suggest we call his bluff. If he doesn't do his normal routine, his film will not open as well and his brand will appear diminished and he will -- in fact -- be f***ing himself because we have his next 2 immediate films."

The leakers are in high gear, because the movie they want killed -- "The Interview" -- is slated for a premiere tomorrow night.

Reps Okay Referendum On State Creation

The House of Representatives yesterday rejected a proposal for the recommendations of the National Conference to be subjected to a referendum, while approving for state creation to go through the process.
This is just as the lawmakers approved independent candidacy for electoral offices and life pension for former presiding officers of the two chambers of the National Assembly.
The House took these decisions while voting on the report of the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the Constitution yesterday.
One of the alterations approved by the House makes it mandatory for the president to address a joint meeting of the National Assembly once a year.
Out of the 261 House members that participated in the constitution amendment voting process, 252 members voted in favour of the amendments, 8 voted against and one abstained. A two-third vote (240 of the 360-member House) is required to amend the constitution before it will be forwarded to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for concurrence.
The 71 amendments approved by the House border on: legislative immunity, local government autonomy, state creation, indigeneship and citizenship, independent candidacy in elections, budgetary process, life pension for National Assembly heads, role for traditional rulers, amongst others.
An alteration of Section 7, amongst others, stops revenue allocation from the federation account to local governments that are not democratically elected. Local government administrations also stand dissolved at the expiration of four years commencing from the date the members of council were sworn in.
House members, while altering Section 59, also voted to bypass the president if he fails to sign a Bill presented to him within 30 days.
“Within seven days, the president of the Senate shall convene a joint sitting of the National Assembly to reconsider the Bill, and if passed by two-thirds majority of members of both houses at such joint sitting, the Bill shall become law and the assent of the president shall not be required,” the alteration reads.
In other key constitutional amendments, House members also approved independent candidacy in elections in Nigeria.
The office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, Nigerian Police, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and national security agencies have now been placed on a first-line charge from Nigeria’s Consolidated Revenue Account.
The lawmakers equally approved life pension for the presidents and deputy presidents of Senate and speakers and deputy speakers of the House of Representatives, provided that they were not impeached from office.
An alteration of Section 241, which inserts a new subsection (2A), bars Nigerian courts or tribunals from staying any proceeding on account of an interlocutory appeal.
House members also voted to include seven items in the concurrent legislative list, including agriculture, railways and pensions.http://leadership.ng/news/387176/reps-okay-referendum-state-creation

Eto’o is 39 Not 32" Says ex wife

Topic: "Eto’o is 39 Not 32" Says ex wife (Read 47 times)

I have been trying to get away from this particular issue, but i couldn't help myself when i saw this report on Graphic Ghana.

Mourinho has his way of bringing up issues from nowhere, and this one is of big concern to me because Eto'o is one of the finest African strikers to play the Game.

Mou brought him to chelsea knowing his age, only to turn around and bring up comments about Eto'o being 32 or maybe 35....

Now former lover of Chelsea footballer Samuel Eto’o has claimed the striker is seven years older than he claims to be.
Mourinho arrived in Istanbul on Monday night livig that remarks he made in a private conversation which undermine his strikers had been secretly filmed and broadcast.

DAVID MOYES SLAMMED MANU'S PERFORMANCE

25/02/2014 22:39, Report by Adam Bostock, Nick Coppack
Moyes: We'll put it right

David Moyes admits Manchester United’s performance in Tuesday night’s shock first-leg defeat to Olympiacos was “really poor” – but is determined to make amends when the sides meet again at Old Trafford on 19 March.

The Reds were strongly fancied to claim a fifth win in five meetings with the Greek side but were instead turned over 2-0 by goals from Alejandro Dominguez and Joel Campbell in the 38th and 55th minutes. The United boss felt the deficit was greater than the difference between the sides, although he did accept his side didn’t “offer enough” at the other end of the pitch where, in the latter stages, Robin van Persie spurned the Reds’ only real chance.

“It's the worst we've played in Europe [this season], that's for sure,” said Moyes in his post-match press conference.

“It was a really poor performance. We didn't get going from the start. We didn't deserve anything from tonight.

"We just never got to grips with things. To a man, you could hardly pick anyone out [who played well]. We just didn't perform well.

“I'm surprised. I didn't see that level of performance coming. We came into the game in good form and a good mindset but it didn't show tonight.

where do we go from here?

Boko Haram and the way forward

Still on the issues of pogrom in north eastern Nigeria. How do we get to this place? In as much as i don't really want to hold FG responsible i will also resist the temptation not to. Basically, with all sense of finding solution to this act of man's unkindness to mankind, i think the FG should assume position to handling this issue properly. As a lay man i think the Nigerian military should ponder on this Viz

1) Evacuation of innocent citizens from area prone to boko haram attacks

2) Closing of Nigeria's boarders along the same red zones

3) Closing of schools in the affected states
